IONX Introduces Telematics System at RSI 2008
WEST CHESTER, Pa., September 21, 2008 — IONX LLC, a newly-launched telematics technology company, is introducing the rail industry’s latest asset monitoring system at the Railway Supply Institute’s Global Railway Tech 2008 convention. The IONX Edge™ system uses highly reliable ultra-low power telematics technology to monitor and track freight car assets.
The IONX Edge asset monitoring system uses satellite and cellular technology to maximize network coverage so customers have the most flexibility to meet their operational needs. The data relayed helps railroads and shippers manage their fleets under increasingly stringent railroad regulations, monitor freight more reliably and improve fleet utilization.
“The rail industry needs an asset monitoring system that can stand up in increasingly complex business situations, from harsh operating environments to changing regulatory requirements,” said Pat Ameen, vice president and general manager, IONX. “The IONX Edge system addresses that need. Users now can manage railcar fleets with actionable location and status information in near real-time from anywhere in the world.”
The IONX Edge asset monitoring system features a communication management unit (CMU) —the intelligence of the system — a self-contained, easy-to-install satellite, cellular or dual-mode (satellite/cellular) communications processor. The unit supplies data about location and status of freight car assets, which is then accessed through a secure, Web site. It provides valuable data so customers can monitor activities that could potentially threaten assets or lading.
Users can receive additional information on railway assets such as door or hatch open/close status by installing IONX Edge sensors on their freight cars. The sensors utilize industrial-grade embedded parts to withstand harsh operating environments.
The IONX Edge asset monitoring system also includes a user-friendly, secure Web interface so users can easily access information about their freight car assets any time. Users can personalize the site to generate reports, receive alerts on location and status via e-mail, view maps of asset locations, and locate inactive assets. Data feeds to IT systems are also available via an XML transfer.
For more intensive monitoring and usage, an auxiliary power pack using solar power and rechargeable batteries is available for the CMU to increase the battery performance and life. A stealth external antenna offers installation flexibility for the CMU, when it must be installed out of sight on certain rail assets.
